Despite threats from Hurrican Isaac, the Republican National Convention (RNC) has come to Florida this year, and thousands of fans (and foes) of the Republican party have descended upon Tampa to attend or otherwise participate in the activities that occur only once every four years.
Coincidentally, the dates of the Republican National Convention also coincide with a national campaign called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, which began August 17th and continues through September 3rd. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) joins other law enforcement and highway safety administrators across the country in cracking down on impaired drivers during the campaign. According to FHP Director David Brierton, “FHP troopers will aggressively look for impaired drivers during the crackdown.”
So what does this actually mean for those looking to partake in RNC events while avoiding being arrested for a Tampa DUI? FHP will bolster its presence on roads and highways by placing all uniformed officers on active patrol for impaired driving, including those normally on administrative duty. FHP will also bring in auxiliary troopers to assist in the effort during the four-day holiday travel period. All officers will be on special alert for signs of impaired driving.
To arrive at your destination safely, the FHP offers four tips:
– Observe and obey all speed limits
– Drive sober, and only sober
– Have a designated driver
– Buckle up
In addition to these tips, our Tampa DUI lawyers recommend the following:
– Know, and respect, your limits
– Stagger each alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink (preferably water)
– Sip, never chug, your drink
– Know what is in your drink
– If you feel at all impaired, ask for a ride or call a cab
Unfortunately, we all wind up in compromising situations. And with FHP on hyper-alert for impaired drivers, a compromising situation is more likely than ever to result in legal intervention.
