Due to a number of complaints from local Tampa residents, officials for the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest have changed some of the rules regarding what is allowed—and what isn’t. Being unaware of these rules will not allow you to avoid a ticket, so read the following and take it to heart before going out on January 25th, to enjoy the myriad of exciting events at the Gasparilla Pirate Fest.
Resist the urge to engage in any of the following behaviors during the Gasparilla Festival, Invasion, Brunch or Parade in order to avoid marring your day and possibly having to deal with a ticket or even an arrest:
- If you are under 21, you know it is illegal for you to drink alcoholic beverages. The Gasparilla Pirate Fest is no exception, and Tampa police will be on the lookout for underage drinkers. Don’t make a mistake which can seriously mar your future—don’t drink if you are under the age of 21, and keep your I.D. handy.
- No coolers allowed. Due to security concerns, coolers are no longer allowed at the Gasparilla Pirate Fest other than those specifically for a specific medication.
- It is unlawful for you to have an open container outside of the designated parade route. Respect this rule; there will be signs posted, showing the parade route, or you can find the exact route at http://gasparillapiratefest.com/schedule.shtml.
- Find a port-a-potty rather than risking receiving a ticket for urinating in public. While it may be tempting to duck behind a tree, bush, or in an alley—don’t! Take advantage of the public toilets which will be set up along the parade route.
- Don’t drive your vehicle or operate your boat after you’ve been drinking. Take advantage of public transportation, a taxi, or a designated driver.
- Keep your clothes on—no nudity or flashing allowed.
Never fear, however, there is plenty of good news to offset the “don’ts,” including:
- Take advantage of the day’s activities and dress up! The day is full of color, excitement and fun, and you want to fit right in, so let your outfit reflect your attitude.
- You are allowed to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages and can partake of alcoholic beverage (along the designated route) by purchasing your drinks from the beer gardens.
- Arrive early to avoid the disappointment of being unable to secure a good vantage point to enjoy the parade. The Gasparilla Street Festival and the Invasion Brunch begin a 10:00 a.m. while the Gasparilla Invasion kicks off at 11:30 and the parade at 2:30. Don’t miss out on the festivities because you are unable to find a parking place.
- Pets and bicycles should stay home. With over 300,000 people expected, it is just too crowded for either.
Don’t forget that over 400 people are arrested annually at the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, not to mention a significant number of tickets handed out. We expect that you will have no problems and will enjoy your day to the fullest, but if trouble does arise, call Finebloom & Haenel, P.A. for the help you need.
