On the morning of August 14th, Kissimmee City Commissioner Sara Shaw was stopped driving a white Ford F-150 (municipal vehicle) by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper going 30 MPH over the posted speed limit on the Florida Turnpike.
Ms. Shaw was caught on a police camera trying to defy the trooper’s allegations of the event and claiming that the truck had a device in the engine designed to limit moving speed of the vehicle (later disproved). Nevertheless, this did not stop the trooper from issuing her a speed ticket.
Under Florida Traffic Rules, if you are going more than 30 MPH over the posted speed limit it is cause for a mandatory court appearance. The trooper was also caught on video notifying Shaw that she needed to appear in Palm Beach County traffic court on September, 17, 2014 or her license would be suspended. Shaw failed to appear in court claiming that she had not received a notice regarding her court date. She is due for a new appearance on October, 15, 2014.
As a result of this news, a meeting was held last Friday by Mayor Jim Swan where a decision was made to revoke the rights of commissioners to drive municipal vehicles.
The penalties on a 30 MPH over the posted speed limit in Florida – maximum fine would be $500, the possibility of 4 points on your license, possibility of a court ordered traffic school, and in some jurisdictions they will suspended your driver’s license for up to 30 days.
