Not even the substance abuse doctors are immune to a DUI. In an ironic turning of tables, the Florida Times-Union reports that a Jacksonville psychiatrist specializing in substance abuse treatment was picked up by local law enforcement under suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The 59-year-old doctor was observed by local law enforcement swerving in his white vehicle. Two police officers pulled him over and, upon suspicion that he might be under the influence, asked the doctor to perform a field sobriety test. The doctor complied, confirming the police officer’s suspicion of the driver’s impairment. He was arrested and booked for DUI.
Records indicate the doctor has been practicing psychiatry, including substance abuse-related therapy, since 1984.
This event just goes to show that anybody is at a substantive risk to run up a DUI charge. Politicians, law enforcement officials, judges, prosecutors and substance abuse treatment professionals are all subject to the harsh DUI laws and penalties in place in Florida. It is important to take certain precautions to prevent DUI charges being levied against you, and to retain a competent DUI lawyer if you find yourself in hot water. Unfortunately, this particular Jacksonville substance abuse counselor had to find out the hard way.
